MAKE ‘EM LAUGH
MAKE 'EM LAUGH
Stand-up Comedy is a very difficult
genre to write, and an even more difficult genre to perform! So much depends
not only on the choice of material (the satire, the fluency, the linking), but
also on the conventions of presenting
Stand-Up (breaking the ‘4th wall’, direct audience address, comic
timing/tempo, mimicking, gesturing, multiple role-playing etcetera).
On Wednesday October 7th,
the Year 11 Drama and Drama Studies classes held an evening christened ‘MAKE 'EM
LAUGH’, where they had the opportunity to perform their original Stand-Up
comedy monologues which they had devised for an assessment task during Term 3.
The challenge for the girls was to bring their monologues to life and perform
before an audience of parents, teachers and friends. This was not an assessment
task for the girls, but simply an opportunity for them to experience Solo work
before an audience and to understand and experience the benefits that come with
facing your fears and rising to meet a challenge!
These Year 11 students were initially
(and understandably) very nervous! However, the bar was raised, the gauntlet
was thrown down, and the students took up the challenge to become Stand-Up
comedians for the evening!
What a wonderfully entertaining,
hilarious occasion “MAKE 'EM LAUGH” was!
BRAVO, girls! You were simply fabulous!
