On Wednesday, February 14th, the Years 11 and 12
Drama classes were taken on an evening excursion to the Playhouse Theatre at
QPAC in order to see new Australian play “Black is the New White” presented by Queensland Theatre in
association with Sydney Theatre Company.
“Black is the New White” is an exciting new work written by
indigenous play-write, Nikkiah Lui and the production was cleverly directed by
Paige Rattray. The play is a delightfully incisive and entertaining rom-com
about two families (one white, the other Aboriginal) brought together by the love
which has blossomed between a daughter and a son. In “Black is the New White” there
is an array of eccentric and loveable characters and there are several moments
of high tension which are hilariously directed. Underneath the comedy though,
there are serious issues which have been insightfully highlighted in the
direction of the play.
The Years 11 and 12 Drama students all thoroughly enjoyed
viewing this entertaining and thought-provoking production, and now their task
is to analyse and evaluate the action of “Black
is the New White” for the artistic choices which so successfully created
dramatic meaning. Ms Fletcher looks forward to reading the students’ written
responses in the coming weeks.
