Year 10 Children's Theatre

During the course of this Semester, the Year 10 Drama students have been undertaking a unit of work on Children’s Theatre: conventions, techniques and practice.
As a culmination of their study, the girls formed groups to devise their own small plays designed specifically for the target audience of young children. Once their scripts were written, the students then worked on producing their plays for an intended audience of Year One children. The Drama class then set about blocking, rehearsing and polishing their productions ready for a real live performance!
So on Monday, May 26th, the productions of Children’s Theatre were performed for Year One pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School (Nundah) and St Mary of the Cross (Wilston) here at Mary MacKillop College. The characters ranged from Pirates to Princesses, Lions to Elephants, each play delighting the little audience members, eliciting shrieks of laughter and joy as the young children immersed themselves in the dramatic action and the world of their imaginations.

The experience was one that the Year 10’s will never forget: creating and shaping a dramatic performance *from the page to the stage* and enjoying the pleasure of the beaming smiles on the faces of little people in the audience.

Feel free to add your feedback on your Children's Theatre experience.

I really enjoyed this task. I liked that we got to step out of the box and do something childish and fun for a real audience.

What I loved about this task was that we actually got to perform it in front of little kids. It was nice to create our own scripts and then see the great responses.

This was a really fun task! It was hard at times but it was great seeing the end product! I think our group did great and hopefully we get to do something as fun as this in the future! The kids were really cool too!

This task was different to what we had to do in 8 and 9, so it was really awesome to take the next step into senior drama and do all of this. It was really cool being able to perform to a live audience.

I loved this task! It was amazing to perform I front of the little kids and to see the expressions on their face when they watched our own scripts pan out. I loved interacting with the kids after the performance and loved hearing about their favourite characters, performances etc.

I loved this task. To perform in front of little kids was magnificent! To see the look on all the kids faces was amazing, and to see them join in and interact with the performances. At times it was hard but in the end it was worth it. It feels good to take that step out of Junior Drama into Senior Drama, and to get a taste of what Drama will be like next year and the year after. I would definitely do it again.

I loved the task. It was very different from anything else we ha done and having the opportunity to step out of our comfort zone to do something new was amazing. I really enjoyed performing to the kids, they interacted with us and joined in which wasreally fun. And watching the expressions at everything we did was wonderful. Even though this task to a lot of work and practise to put in was really worth it and I enjoyed every minute of it. I loved the task and would defintley do it again :)

I was so happy to do this task. The whole process was very enjoyable. From writing the script to rehearsing to performing! It was an amazing experience and am so happy to be apart of the year 10 drama class. I look forward to more tasks like this in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this terms year 10 children's theatre! It was very fun and exciting and taught me a lot of new skills, especially with interaction with the small children! I loved meeting the little kids and this activity made me feel like a little child again which was a great experience. It was also great to change the style of audiences as I'm used to performing for my class and my class only. The future grade 10s should be very excited as this was a very fun activity to do and perform. Loved children's theatre so much!

This terms year 10 children's theatre production was one of the most interesting/fun things I have ever performed in drama. Having a performance with all different forms of characters with different personalities was so much fun to play around with. having little kids come in and watch our children's theatre was very different but very effective in seeing what children thought of our productions. Having time with the little kids in the end really put the cherry on top of the day and I would love to do it again!
