For an amateur play, Radiance wasn't that bad. However, there were some things that just didn't appeal to me as an audience member. After studying the text for both 11 English and Drama, I am aware of the amount of emotion present in the script and film adaptation: this production just didn't cut it for me. The emotional mindsets of the characters seemed forced onto the audience at times, to the point where it began to lose my attention. Although the production could have accomplished so much more, it achieved what it set out to do: to entertain, to provoke and to bring a greater value into the world of amateur theatre.

The performance of Radiance was a very simple play, but still managed to have the effect to engage my attention. there were times when the play seemed to have gaps and silences which didnt make much sence and the characters didnt get very emotional when they really needed to. but i still think it was a great performance.

Since I had analysed the text both in Year 11 Drama and English, I had big expectations on how the characters would portray their emotions as well as the overall outcome of the production. Although an excellent piece of amateur theatre, my expectations were not reached. In moments of tension I found myself starring at the Ibis in the "photo". Rather than using emotional memory, the dialogue seemed to just be read out at points rather than building the character and the story. There was much talent in Radiance but the direction and choice of portrayal fell short for me.

Radiance, for an amateur theatre piece, was a comfortable production. The acting was good, and the mood and pace of the production was consistent. However, in the wake of the emotional rollercoaster that was Hamlet, it was a disappointment. My expectations of the play, in comparison to the text which I had studied and really connected with, we're not met, and I found myself longing for more ... both from the actors, and from the director in regards to blocking, gesture and set design. I, like the majority of the audience, got distracted at times due to the data-projected 'ibis' on the screen in a scene meant for great tension.

It was small things like this which, combined, ended up as a big thing, and did dampen my appreciation of the play. There was definitely a lot of talent on stage, but the choices made by the director and the production as a whole, really fell short of my expectations.

Even though 'Radiance' is a remarkable story, this version of the play, in my opinion was very undemanding. I have seen other versions of the play, and therefore was almost disappointed by the way the piece was portrayed in this adaptation. The actors were very good and at some points created real tension, but for the most time the conversation between the actors seemed not convincing. Other audience members seemed to think the actors should swap characters to appear more believable. Even though there were some directing oversights, the actors themselves were brilliant and I enjoyed the evening with friends. I strongly recommend supporting 'The Arts Theatre' and other amateur theatres in Brisbane, as I believe they are of great cultural significance.
